Lighter MacBook Air to be made out of hydrogen
Wednesday, November 12, 2008 13:59Lightest element in the universe is also the most abundant
Inside sources at Apple say the computer company is working on a lighter version of the MacBook Air. Contrary to recent reports saying the new enclosure would be made out of carbon fiber, the new enclosure will actually be made entirely from hydrogen.
This means Apple will be getting rid of their famed “unibody design” made from a single piece of aluminum. This same design can be found on the new MacBooks, although an insider at Apple claims this is just “a clever piece of marketing used to lure in geeks that actually care about that sort of thing.”
If true, the hydrogen enclosure would drop the overall MacBook Air enclosure weight down from 1.45 pounds to just 0.47 grams.
Not only is hydrogen the lightest element in the universe, it’s also the most abundant, which could be a big cost savings to Apple on materials.
The biggest problem with an all hydrogen enclosure is that hydrogen is a gas. Gases, while light, don’t normally do a great job of holding together fragile computer components such as a hard drive, motherboard and battery, not to mention the screen. The hydrogen molecules could also easily blow away, an issue not currently covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan.
But if any company can figure out a way around this minor issue, Apple can. And if they do, it looks like the MacBook Air will finally live up to its name.

Hydrogen? Really?? This is just not true about the Macbook Air! It is obvious that air is 80% NITROGEN so THAT will surely be the gas of choice for the new ‘Air. Plus - it will completely get around the issue of flammability that using hydrogen would pose. So it is obvious this story is factually incorrect! What a brilliant idea from Apple! - the recycling issue will be totally covered (Hi GreenPeace!) as the ‘Air will completely breakdown and provide nitrogen enrichment for any garden soil. What a boon for primary industry. Apple just needs to keep this one quiet before any PC makers jump on the idea and inflate prices. Inflate…um.. yeah, ok. Damn this medication is good.
